The Planning and Housing Committee approved planning permissions on Oct. 7 that would support nearly 850 new homes in Ottawa, according to the office of Coun. Glen Gower, who represents Stittsville in Ward 6. Council will consider the committee's recommendations on Oct. 8.1

The committee approved a zoning amendment for a new subdivision on Hazeldean Road near Mantra Street in Stittsville. The developer plans 347 homes on the site of a driving range that is relocating, with a mix of detached homes, townhomes and apartment-style housing.1

The amendment would protect open space along the Carp River, where pathways are planned to connect to nearby neighbourhoods. Construction cannot begin until approved site work is completed and floodplain maps for the area are updated.1

Overbrook tower would add 401 homes

The committee also approved plans for a 30-storey building on St. Laurent Boulevard north of Queen Mary Street in Overbrook. The building would add 401 homes and ground-floor commercial space within walking distance of St. Laurent Station.1

The amendments would allow a taller building with more homes on the site, in line with the City's Official Plan, and the development would include new tree-planting areas.1

City tracks progress toward 2031 target

City Council has set a goal of helping build 151,000 homes in Ottawa by 2031, with tracking that began in January 2023. Since then, applications have been approved for more than 74,000 new homes, or more than 49 per cent of the homes needed to meet the goal.1

Construction started on more than 4,100 homes in the first half of the year, and Ottawa continues to have one of the highest rates of new home construction in Ontario. Since the start of 2026, the committee has recommended planning approvals that would support nearly 4,200 new homes.1

If Council approves the committee's recommendations, developers can move forward with the next steps to build another 832 homes. The City's interactive housing approvals dashboard tracks housing approvals and development activity.1
