Jennifer Lawrence to Star in Zach Cregger's Sci-Fi Thriller The Flood

Jennifer Lawrence will star in The Flood, the upcoming sci-fi thriller from writer and director Zach Cregger, according to the Motion Picture Association. Warner Bros.' New Line has picked up the film, reuniting Cregger with the studio that produced his 2025 breakout hit Weapons.

Cregger wrote the script from an original idea and is set to direct and produce. Production is slated to start early next year, with a quick-turnaround release planned for Aug. 11, 2028.

The announcement follows the critical and commercial success of Cregger's third straight hit film, Resident Evil, which is in theaters now. The director's hot streak has made his next project a magnet for top talent.

Cregger has worked with a roster of notable performers in recent years, including Josh Brolin, Julia Garner and Amy Madigan in Weapons. Madigan received an Oscar for her performance as Aunt Gladys, the film's scene-stealing villain. Austin Abrams has also appeared in both Weapons and Resident Evil.

Lawrence is a major get for the project, given how carefully she selects her roles. Her most recent part was in Lynne Ramsay's Die My Love opposite Robert Pattinson, and she will next star alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese's What Happens at Night.

Little is known about the plot of The Flood, but Cregger has hinted that it will differ from his previous work. He told Men's Health that the film shares some similarity with Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Cregger added that he considers 2001 a thrilling horror movie about human nature and artificial intelligence that asks big questions. He said there is some similarity between that film and The Flood in that way.

The Flood is set for release on Aug. 11, 2028. Production is slated to begin early next year.
