Iqaluit water shut down Sept. 13 for infrastructure work, boil advisory issued

The City of Iqaluit has announced a water shut down on September 13, from approximately 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, to allow for necessary water infrastructure work. The interruption affects the areas numbered 400 – 500, 523 – 588 and 1601 – 1992, according to a public service announcement published September 11, 2026.

When water pressure drops, the Chief Public Health Officer of Nunavut automatically issues a precautionary boil water advisory. If the interruption affects your residence, you are under that advisory.

During a precautionary boil water advisory, the City recommends that all water for consumption be brought to a rolling boil for a minimum of one full minute. It recommends boiling water for drinking, preparing infant formulas, preparing juices and ice cubes, washing fruits and vegetables, cooking, or brushing teeth.

Water can be boiled either in a pot or kettle on a stove or an electric kettle without an automatic shut-off. The City will release a public service announcement when the advisory is lifted, and will inform residents when the Office of the Chief Public Health Officer says it is lifted.
