Iqaluit city offices closed Sept. 30 for Truth and Reconciliation Day

Iqaluit city hall and all other municipal offices will be closed Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2026, for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the City of Iqaluit said in a public service announcement dated Sept. 29, 2026.

The city describes the day as one to honour the strength and resilience of all Inuit and Indigenous Survivors of residential schools, their families and their communities. It says the day invites you to listen, learn and reflect on the experiences of Survivors, their families and communities.

Not everything stops. Residential water and sewer services and garbage collection will operate on their regular schedule, according to the city. The Iqaluit Aquatic Centre will be open from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM, which is noon to 4 p.m.

The city encourages residents to take part in local events, engage with the teachings and perspectives shared by Inuit and Indigenous community members, and continue these conversations beyond September 30.

The city frames the day as an opportunity to consider how you can contribute to reconciliation through everyday actions and relationships. It also says the work should continue on this day and every day.
