ECCO landfill fire contained as crews build cover over hotspots

Crews are still working the ECCO Recycling facility landfill fire in southeast Calgary, containing and suppressing isolated hotspots inside the landfill pile, the City of Calgary said Sept. 20. Fire suppression resources remain on site and continue to monitor areas of elevated heat within the pile.

More than 800 cubic metres of soil and cover material were delivered to the site yesterday, and the city expects similar volumes throughout the coming week as protective cover is built over affected areas. Crews are also assessing an underground utility access point where elevated temperatures have previously been observed, work the city says is guiding suppression and containment.

The fire remains contained to the landfill site. Air quality monitoring on and around the site continues to show no immediate public safety concerns beyond the landfill property, according to the city.

Residents in southeast Calgary may keep noticing smoke or odours as weather and wind conditions change. People sensitive to smoke should consider limiting outdoor activities and taking appropriate precautions, the city said.
