Calgary closes lanes on 14th Street S.W. for water main repair as boil water advisory holds
Two northbound and two southbound lanes between 75 Avenue and Heritage Drive are shut until further notice, the City of Calgary said. A boil water advisory ordered by Alberta Health Services remains in effect for Eagle Ridge and Heritage Park.
Calgary has closed two northbound and two southbound lanes on 14th Street S.W. between 75 Avenue S.W. and Heritage Drive S.W. until further notice to complete water main repairs, leaving one lane open in each direction, the City of Calgary said.1
The city said significant traffic delays are likely and asked drivers to use alternative routes and follow all signage and detours. Crews began repairs on Friday, October 16, on a water main that supports the community of Eagle Ridge and Heritage Park.1
During the work, crews experienced an unanticipated depressurization of the pipe and could not guarantee water quality. As a precaution, Alberta Health Services ordered a boil water advisory, which remains in effect until further notice.1
The city said the issue is not related to the Bearspaw South Feeder Main and is not impacting Rockyview General Hospital. It said the lane closures may be adjusted depending on the condition of the pipe.1
This is a challenging repair and will take some time to complete.1City of Calgary
Residents in the affected area are advised to bring all tap water to a rolling boil for one full minute before any consumption, including drinking, coffee and tea, cooking, brushing teeth, cleaning raw foods, preparing infant formula or juices, and making ice.1
The city said in-home water filters are not sufficient and water in them must still be boiled before use. Residents may instead buy bottled water for the duration of the advisory. Water wagons are being provided, and their locations will be posted on calgary.ca/boilwater.1
Water used for bathing and laundry does not require boiling, the city said. If residents are not using a dishwasher, water used for cleaning surfaces or dishes should be boiled.1
Food service establishments, care providers and personal service facilities should contact Environmental Public Health at 1-833-476-4743 for direction, the city said. Affected residents will be contacted directly when the advisory is lifted, and updates will be available on calgary.ca/boilwater.1
The City of Calgary said it is working closely with Alberta Environment and Protected Areas and Alberta Health Services to resolve the water quality concerns. Health-related questions can go to Health Link at 811.1
