Mississauga invites residents to try city planning on World Urbanism Day
The City of Mississauga is pointing residents to a downtown scale model, an open data hub and a Nov. 19 urban design open house as ways to see how planning decisions are made.
Residents who want to know why some streets are busy and others quiet, or how the city decides where parks and public art go, can start with the Downtown Model at the Mississauga Civic Centre, the City of Mississauga said in a notice marking World Urbanism Day on Nov. 8.1
The civic centre is open to the public and holds a miniature replica of the downtown core showing how landmarks, buildings, streets and parks connect, according to the City of Mississauga. The model is regularly updated as new buildings and projects are completed, and the city suggests visitors try to spot Kariya Park, Square One and other major landmarks.1
An open house on Nov. 19
The city has scheduled an urban design open house for Nov. 19, where residents can meet planning staff and learn about the City's ongoing urban design program review, which the notice says influences the look and feel of the community. Displays will explain the program and how it is changing, and attendees can ask questions and share ideas.1
The notice does not give a time or location for the open house beyond the date.1
Data and development applications
Mississauga was one of the first municipalities to make planning data publicly accessible, the city said. The City Planning Data Hub gives residents access to the data planners use, including how the city is growing, the types of businesses in a neighbourhood, historical trends and a virtual 3D model of Mississauga.1

A separate active development applications portal shows developments across the city in real time, with renderings of proposed projects, application details and upcoming public meetings, according to the City of Mississauga.1
Where decisions get discussed
Development applications and other planning matters are discussed at the Planning and Development Committee before they reach council, the city said. Meetings are broadcast live on the City's website, and residents can submit comments or register to speak.1
The City's Your Say platform lists upcoming and completed engagements and offers updates on city programs and policies, according to the notice. The city also points residents to its Guide to City Planning and Development for the basics of how planning work is done.1
Urban planning is about more than what gets built and where, it's about creating places that are functional, attractive and connected.1City of Mississauga
