Calgary Fire Department crews responded to a structure fire in the 2300 block of Mackay Road NW just before 10 a.m. on Nov. 5, the department said, and found heavy flames and smoke coming from a detached garage at the rear of a single-story residential property.1

Firefighters stretched a high-volume hose line into the alley and began knocking down the fire in the garage, the department said. A second hose line was stretched into the back yard to prevent the spread of fire to the home.1

Occupants from the neighbouring homes had all self-exited and no injuries were reported, according to the department. The fire was contained to the garage and stopped from spreading to the home and neighbouring homes.1

The garage sustained severe structural damage. The home was considered vacant, with windows and doorways boarded up and utilities previously disconnected, the department said.1

A fire investigator attended the scene, and the cause remains under investigation, according to the department. A fire watch crew has been assigned to monitor conditions.1

The Calgary Fire Department is part of the Coordinated Safety Response Team, or CSRT, which works with agencies including the Calgary Police Service, Alberta Health Services and other City services to address vacant and problem properties that may pose safety risks to occupants, neighbouring properties and the surrounding community, the department said.1

Calgarians concerned about a vacant or problem property can report their concerns through Calgary 311, the department said. Reports should include the property address or location, a description of the concern, when the issue was observed and photos, if they can be taken safely.1

The department said the information helps City staff assess the concern and direct it to the appropriate service. It advised people not to enter a property or put themselves at risk to gather information, and to call 911 if there is an emergency or immediate threat to life or safety.1
