Ottawa, Manitoba renew Lake Winnipeg MOU, announce $2.8 million for freshwater projects

Canada and Manitoba renewed their Memorandum of Understanding Respecting Lake Winnipeg and the Lake Winnipeg Basin, and Canada announced more than $2.8 million for freshwater projects, according to a government announcement published Sept. 9, 2026.1

The MOU supports communication, consensus-building, science collaboration and the advancement of shared priorities to inform decisions and actions that support the long-term health of Lake Winnipeg and its basin, the announcement says.1

For its part, the Lake Winnipeg Freshwater Ecosystem Initiative provides financial support for partner-led projects that improve the water quality and ecological health of Lake Winnipeg.1
