Newfoundland and Labrador seeks public input on population growth strategy

Newfoundland and Labrador is asking the public to help shape a population growth strategy, with the Department of Jobs, Growth and Rural Development collecting input until Oct. 11, 2026. The department says population growth is essential to supporting economic development, addressing labour market needs, strengthening communities and ensuring long-term prosperity throughout the province.

The strategy will guide government actions to attract, retain and support people and families in Newfoundland and Labrador, and will focus on four areas: growing the workforce, growing families, growing regions and growing in-migration. Members of the public can take part through the EngageNL platform or by emailing PopulationGrowth@gov.nl.ca.

The province says additional questionnaires will go to local and municipal governments, Indigenous governments and organizations, and employers throughout Newfoundland and Labrador to help ensure a broad range of perspectives are reflected. Feedback from the engagement process will help identify opportunities, challenges and priorities related to population growth.

The Department of Jobs, Growth and Rural Development is also developing related strategies to advance rural revitalization and population growth. The government encourages participation in engagement and consultation activities through EngageNL as it pursues economic and population growth in Newfoundland and Labrador.
