Newfoundland and Labrador's Resource Enforcement Division is asking the public for information about a moose wastage incident on Batteau Barrens Resource Road, which is reached from Route 430 about 12 kilometres south of River of Ponds. The division, part of the Department of Forestry, Agriculture and Lands, said officers opened an investigation after the remains of an adult cow moose were abandoned at the 15-kilometre mark of the resource road.1

The incident occurred sometime during the period of October 1-2, the department said. It said the public is reminded that it is an offence under the Wild Life Act to wilfully or intentionally allow the flesh of wildlife that has been taken or killed for food to be destroyed, wasted or spoiled.1

Intentional wastage of meat carries a fine of not less than $500, up to a maximum of $25,000, and in default of payment, imprisonment up to three months, according to the advisory.1

The division is asking anyone with information that may assist the investigation to call 709-861-4701 or make an anonymous report via the 24/7 Poaching Line at 1-877-820-0999. Reports can also be submitted anonymously at www.stoppoaching.ca.1
