General government posts $10.5-billion surplus in second quarter

The Canadian general government recorded a surplus of $10.5 billion in the second quarter, an increase of $2.3 billion compared with the same quarter a year earlier, Statistics Canada reported Sept. 25.

Excluding social security funds, the general government recorded a deficit of $17.2 billion. The federal government deficit was $4.1 billion, up $1.1 billion from the second quarter of 2025, as growth in expenses outpaced revenue.

The deficit of provincial and territorial governments was $10.1 billion, an increase of $0.3 billion from a year earlier.
