Liberal members of the Standing Committee on Indigenous and Northern Affairs voted on Oct. 22 to stall clause-by-clause review of Bill S-2, an act to amend the Indian Act, the Union of BC Indian Chiefs said in a release dated the same day. The First Nations organization said the vote further delays action on sex- and race-based discrimination in the Indian Act.1

The Indian Act Sex Discrimination Working Group travelled from across the country to Ottawa that week and is calling on Prime Minister Carney and his caucus to advance Bill S-2 as amended by the Senate, the union said. The group says that step would end the second-generation cut-off, which it describes as a longstanding human rights violation.1
