College Drive's first stage done; Cumberland to close Friday for four to five weeks

The City of Saskatoon says Stage One of the Link project is complete and a new left-turn signal at the hospitals will be activated Thursday evening. Cumberland Avenue closes between College Drive and Elliott Street at 7 a.m. Friday.

The City of Saskatoon issued the construction notice at 4:14 p.m. on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. It says Stage One of the Link construction project, from the University Bridge to the Hospital Drive/University Drive intersection, is now complete.1

Landscaping is getting final touches, and traffic signal lights are being installed at the Hospital Drive/University Drive intersection. The city says a signaled left turn into the hospitals is planned for activation Thursday evening.1

Stage Two, from the Hospital Drive/University Drive intersection to Cumberland Avenue, is also moving along. Pedestrian walkways and the westbound lanes, the north lanes, are undergoing final work and paving.1

Clarence Avenue is fully closed in both directions between Colony Street and Aird Street from 7 a.m. on Thursday, October 22 until 7 a.m. on Friday, October 23. The city says the closure is required for emergency Priority 1 sewer replacement, and asks drivers to use alternate routes and follow posted signage.1

Cumberland Avenue closes between College Drive and Elliott Street beginning 7 a.m. on Friday, October 23, for approximately four to five weeks. The city says the closure is needed to rebuild the north curb to its new location and install new traffic signals at the intersection.1

The city says the work will help prepare the corridor for winter operations and minimize further closures in 2027. Cumberland Avenue will not be accessible from College Drive during construction, but pedestrian access along Cumberland Avenue will remain open.1

College Drive traffic will continue in both directions, with one lane in each direction. Traffic will initially use the south lanes between Hospital Drive/University Drive and just east of Cumberland Avenue, then shift to the north lanes once work on the north side is complete.1

Existing traffic and pedestrian signals at the intersection will be deactivated. Temporary pedestrian signals will be installed just east of the intersection to maintain a crossing, and the city asks drivers and pedestrians to follow posted signage and signals and use caution.1

Cumberland Avenue is expected to reopen for the winter once construction is complete. Crews will continue working to advance the remaining corridor improvements and open two lanes of traffic on College Drive in each direction for the winter, where planned.1

The closure on Cumberland Avenue starts at 7 a.m. on Friday, October 23 and is expected to last four to five weeks. The Clarence Avenue closure runs from 7 a.m. on Thursday, October 22 until 7 a.m. on Friday, October 23.1
